Back in '05 I had to choose between a full weld overlay or just cutting out a bad section on a 4-inch steam line. Went with the cut out and it's still holding today.

Full weld overlay sounds like massive overkill for a four inch line. Was the bad section really that big, or could a simple repair have done the job? Sometimes the more extreme fix gets picked just to avoid any future callbacks. You ever worry you did more work than you needed to?

Totally get that worry about overdoing it. Sometimes the simpler fix is actually the more skilled choice because it shows you really understood the problem. Cutting out the bad part instead of covering it up was probably the right call for the long run.
