Finally got a clean weld on 3/8 inch plate after struggling for a week.

My beads kept looking cold and porous on this repair job for a feedwater heater. Switched from 7018 to 6010 rods and slowed my travel speed way down, and the difference after two days of practice was night and day. What's your go-to rod for thicker plate when you're in a tight spot?

Switching to 6010 was a solid move, I read that it handles dirty plate better.

Yeah, 6010 really does dig in and clean up the rust and mill scale as you go. It's not magic like you said, but it makes a huge difference on that old, greasy plate from the scrapyard. Jennyh41 has a point that skill matters most, but the right rod sure makes the job less of a fight.

Lol is it really that deep though? It's just a weld bead on some plate, not a space shuttle part. 6010 is fine for dirty metal but it's not some magic fix, you probably just got better at running it. People act like picking the right rod is life or death.
