Guy on my crew in Gary told me to stop hammering tube ends and use a reamer, and it saved me 45 minutes
Three years back I was on a boiler retube job in Gary, Indiana, and I was rushing to get rolled tubes seated before lunch. I was banging the tube ends with my hammer to knock the burrs off, which I thought was fine because that's how the guy who trained me did it. An older boilermaker named Ray watched me for about two minutes, then walked over and put his hand on my wrist to stop me. He pulled a hand reamer out of his bucket, showed me how to turn it two or three times, and said 'that hammer is why your tubes keep hanging up on the holes.' He was right, my tubes went in smooth after that and I finished my row about 45 minutes faster than I would have. What got me was he didn't yell or write me up, he just showed me the right way like it was nothing. I still carry that same style reamer in my bucket today. Any of you got an old timer who set you straight like that?
