I was sure my tack weld was good enough until the foreman tapped it with a chisel

On a boiler tube replacement last month, I was doing my usual tack on a 2-inch pipe. The foreman, Mike, walked by and just gave it a light tap with his cold chisel. The whole thing popped right off. He said, 'If it won't hold a tap, it won't hold pressure.' I'd been rushing the cleaning step, thinking the heat would burn through the light scale. Now I wire brush until my arm hurts. Has anyone else had a simple test show them a bad habit?

Mike's chisel test is the real deal. I started doing a light hammer tap on my own tacks before anyone else sees them. It's saved me some serious face a few times.

Sounds a bit extra, doubt my tacks need a whole test run.

It's wild how many shortcuts we take until a simple check proves them wrong. That chisel test is like checking if a door is locked by giving it a push before you walk away.
