Just realized how much weight those old riveted joints actually hold

I was doing some research for a side project last night, nothing work related, just bored and scrolling through old boiler manuals online. Stumbled on a stat that said those old triple riveted lap joints from the early 1900s could handle over 50,000 pounds of pressure per square inch before failing. That blew my mind because I've seen some of those vintage drums that look like rust buckets on the outside but still hold up in service for decades. Makes you wonder if modern welding is really that much better or if we just trust it more because it's newer. I've worked on plenty of welded joints that failed after 10 years, but those riveted monsters from the 1920s are still ticking in some plants. Has anyone else dug into the old specs and found something that made you rethink the way we do things now?

@jakeb25 you hit on something I noticed too with an old bridge repair job I helped with. Those riveted connections actually held tighter as the metal expanded and contracted over the years, almost like they self-sealed. Makes modern welding feel like we're just trusting a pretty bead instead of the real physics underneath.

I was reading an old power plant engineering book from the 1940s that said those riveted joints actually got stronger over time as the rust sort of sealed everything up tighter. Something about the way the plates would swell and lock together under constant pressure. I think there's a reason those old boilers are still running in some places while modern ones get swapped out every 15 years. Not saying we should go back to riveting everything, but it does make you wonder if we overcomplicate stuff sometimes.
