My foreman called me out for skipping preheat on a 6-inch pipe flange
He said the weld would crack before the winter and sure enough, three months later I was grinding out a hairline fracture on that same flange, so has anyone else had a weld fail because you rushed the heat?

Oh wow, that’s a hard lesson right there. Sounds like your foreman knew exactly what he was talking about. Bet you never skip preheat again.

Bet you never skip preheat again" - that's the kind of lesson that sticks with you forever. I read an article last month that said something like 40% of weld failures start with thermal issues from skipping preheat. Makes you wonder how many guys are out there learning this the hard way right now.

@norag66 nailed it - that foreman saved you from a bigger headache, I used to think preheat was overkill but that cracked flange changed my mind quick.
