Old timer told me to quit welding with my gloves off, still thinking about it

I was at a job in Gary, Indiana back in March and this guy with 30 years in pulled me aside after I laid a clean bead with bare hands, said I'd regret it by 50. He had hands like cracked leather and showed me his knuckles, but I see young guys swear by the feel, so has anyone else gotten that lecture and actually changed how they work?
