Pro tip: I was welding a 3/8 inch plate for a pressure vessel and kept getting porosity, until a foreman in Tulsa told me to check my gas lens.
Turns out I had a tiny crack in the ceramic cup I never noticed, letting in air. Swapped it out and the next bead was clean as a whistle. How often do you guys inspect your gas setup before a big weld?

That gas lens check is a lifesaver. It's crazy how a hairline crack you can barely see can ruin a whole day's work. Makes you want to build a quick pre-weld checklist for the whole gas system, not just the cup. Check all the connections back to the bottle, make sure the hose isn't pinched anywhere. A few extra seconds can save hours of grinding out bad welds.

Honestly seems like overkill for most jobs. A quick cup check usually catches the big problems. Spending extra time on every single connection feels like busywork when you're trying to get parts out the door. Most of the time, if the gas is flowing at the torch, you're good to go. Only time I go full detective is on a critical weld that absolutely cannot fail.

Gas flow doesn't mean no leaks. @laurajenkins is right.
