Shoutout to the old lead hand who showed me a better way to fit pipe

Been at this trade for about 6 years now, mostly doing shop work in Tulsa. Always thought my way of lining up flanges with a pry bar was fine until this veteran walked over and handed me a 3/8 chain fall. Took me an extra 20 minutes the first time but honestly, the alignment was spot on and I havent gone back since. Anyone else have a stubborn habit that took an older guy to break?

Old guys got that secret knowledge locked away like it’s gold, swear they wait until you’re halfway done before they hand it over. Probably had a bet going with the foreman to see how long you’d keep fighting that pry bar. Last time I tried to muscle a flange into place, the old timer just stood there sipping coffee and counting the clamps I was about to bend. Took him exactly one look at my face and he said “you fixing that or fighting it?” And honestly, that stung worse than any measurement mistake I ever made. Now I just ask for the chain fall before I even start, saves me the lecture and the sore arms.
