Swapped to flux core wire and my welds got worse before they got better
Finally gave up on my MIG setup on that 3/8 plate job last week and switched to flux core like the old timers keep saying. First three beads looked like a bird pooped on the steel. Tons of slag and spatter. Kept at it though and by the end of the shift my penetration was way deeper. Not as pretty but I think it's stronger. Any of you guys made the switch and had a rough start?

Flux core is just compensating for poor technique and a dirty setup, you'd get better results long term by fixing your gas delivery and cleaning the metal.
