Tape measure trick for long seams, total game changer or just me?

I kept fighting with sagging scribe marks on 40 foot shells, so I tried using a drywall square clipped to my tape end instead of hooking the edge. It held true for the whole pass, maybe I'm late to this. Anyone else do something offbeat like that or is this just a one job wonder?
