That old weld-test procedure from the 80s still beats the modern cert course I took

I dug up a 1987 manual from a retired boilermaker in Gary, Indiana and the root pass technique it lays out is way more honest than the 6G pipe test I paid 1,200 bucks for last spring, so what other outdated tricks are worth dusting off?
