Turns out a 1/16 inch misalignment on a tube sheet can cost you 40 hours
Was reading through an old ASME code book my foreman lent me and saw that tube-to-tubesheet welds need to be within 1/16 inch of true position or the whole bank gets rejected on inspection. I always thought close enough was fine on the layout, but that number hit me hard. Any of you guys actually seen a job get torn apart over that tolerance?
Had a foreman named Dale back in '09 who made us re-lay a whole condenser tube sheet because the template slipped a hair over 1/16 during a night shift. We spent the next two days pulling tubes while he stood there with a tape measure looking like a disappointed dad. Funny thing is the inspector never even flagged that bank, Dale just wasn't taking the chance.
