Two ways to cut a 36 inch header on a tube sheet and I want to hear which one you trust
Was on a job in Gary last Tuesday and a fitter named Dale tried to walk a torch across a 36 inch tube sheet header freehand because setting up the track took too long. He got about 8 inches in before the cut drifted and we had to grind it back for 2 hours. The other guy on our crew swears by the track every single time and calls freehand a rookie move. So which is it, is freehand ever worth the risk on a short cut or do you always run the track?
Rail doesn't care how good your hands are, it just follows the line you set. Freehand works right up until your arm gets tired or the wind picks up or you hit a soft spot in the metal, and then you're Dale. Track setup feels slow but it's nothing compared to 2 hours of grinding.
