Two welding rods on the same joint, night and day difference
I ran a test last Tuesday on a cracked steam drum patch using both a 7018 and an old 6010 rod I had kicking around. The 7018 lay down so smooth I barely needed to grind, but the 6010 left me with splatter and a bead that looked like a rope. In 22 years in this trade, I never realized how much the rod choice affects the final pass on high carbon steel. Has anyone else switched rods on a tricky repair and seen that big a gap in quality?
