Appreciation post: the bone folder my mentor gave me in Portland in 2012 still shapes every spine I case in
When I started out I was pressing signatures with a stack of old encyclopedias and a cutting board, which worked about as well as you'd guess. My mentor handed me her spare bone folder and showed me how to run it along the fold with just my thumb pressure, and it changed how tight my sections sat. Now I have a teflon folder for delicate paper and a brass one for heavy board, but the plain bone one still gets used on almost every book. Anyone else still reach for the oldest tool on the bench even after buying newer stuff?
Does the old tool ever get retired, or does it just keep earning its spot? I bet the reason it stays in rotation is muscle memory, your thumb knows exactly how much pressure that bone wants after a thousand folds. New tools are nice, but the one you learned on teaches your hands the feel first.
