Burned $60 on cheap linen thread that snapped on every signature

I bought a bulk spool of bargain linen thread off a random site last month because the price was too good to pass up, and I want to save everyone else the trouble. First book I sewed with it, the thread snapped on three different signatures before I even got to the end. I figured it was a fluke, so I did a test run and it broke under barely any tension at all. There went my whole afternoon plus the $60, and I had to cut the stitches out and start over on a book I was already halfway done with. Has anyone found a decent thread that doesn't cost a fortune but actually holds up?
