Caught myself pressing my spine creases with a bone folder for 3 years straight

I was watching a restoration video last week and the guy just ran his thumb along the spine to set the crease. No bone folder, no extra pressure, just a light thumb pass. Turns out I've been overworking my spines and crushing the paper fibers this whole time. Anyone else find out they were doing some basic step completely backwards?

Gently reminding my spine with my thumb now.

Buddy of mine was the same way with a bone folder. Used it for everything, then one day his teacher watched him flatten a book and just said "you really hate that spine, huh." Never touched the folder again.

That line about hating the spine really stuck with me. When I was learning to bind books, I kept pressing down too hard with my folder until my teacher showed me how to let the weight of the tool do the work instead of my arm.
