I was sure my kettle stitch was fine until a binder in Portland watched me work

I was at the local library's craft fair last month, showing a simple pamphlet stitch. An older guy, a retired binder named Frank, leaned in and said, 'Your thread tension is fighting the paper grain.' He took my needle, re-poked the holes just a millimeter over, and did two stitches. The difference was instant; the signatures lay flat and tight. I've redone my hole placement on every project since. Has anyone else had a simple tip completely change a basic step for them?
