Everyone raves about hand-crank mills for control, but I spent $200 on one and grinding for bread takes forever, like 20 minutes per batch. I switched to a cheap electric burr grinder I got for $60 and it blows through the same job in 3 minutes flat. Anyone else find the romantic idea of hand milling just doesn't hold up for daily use?
Went through the exact same thing with a hand mill I bought because of all the hype online. Spent about 15 minutes cranking for one loaf and my arm was shot, plus the flour was still kinda coarse no matter how tight I set it. The thing about hand mills is they sound great in theory but nobody talks about how long it actually takes or how much you have to crank for a decent amount of flour. Switched to an electric burr grinder and never looked back, way faster and the grind is way more even too. The only real perk of hand milling is you can do it without power, so if that matters to you then keep it around as a backup. For daily baking though, electric wins every time and it's not even close.
