My hot take after mending a hundred paperbacks: glue sticks work fine for quick repairs.
Glue sticks dry clear and hold strong enough for most everyday book repairs without the mess of liquid adhesive.

Glue sticks work for a quick fix, but that glue turns brittle and cracks over time. Acid-free book glue lasts way longer for a proper repair.

Tried using a glue stick to fix my favorite book's spine once. I was so convinced it was a clever hack, felt like a genius for about five minutes. That thing fell apart in days, like it gave up on life, and now I have a book that looks like it survived a tornado. My big repair moment turned into a sad pile of loose pages on my shelf. Should have just spent the extra time with the good glue instead of going for the quick win.
