My old boss swore by PVA for everything and my first hardcover came out like a wet cracker
Back when I was learning, this guy who ran a small bindery in Sacramento handed me a jug of PVA and said it was all I would ever need, even for spine linings on a thick book. I believed him for about three projects, then the third one warped so bad the boards curled up like taco shells after two days in my dry apartment. Switched to a proper starch paste mix for the spine and the thing laid flat within hours, no drama. Cost me maybe $9 in wasted boards to figure that out, which honestly was cheap. So what are you all actually using for spine glue on heavy signatures, or am I the only one who got burned trusting one jug for everything?
