My shears went from butter to rusty garbage in 5 days of shop dust

Left my 8 inch shears on the bench during a leather binding run and the fine grit from skiving ate the edge so bad I had to send them out for a regrind, has anyone else had their cutting tools wrecked by environmental dust in their bindery?

honestly my sharpening game is more of a dull sharpening game, I think I've chipped more metal than I've kept. five days and that blade looks like I used it to open a brick wall, which I did not, but it sure looks like it. the edge is basically a serrated saw now, perfect for cutting bread, terrible for anything else. at least the handle looks good, so I got that going for me. guess I'll stick to buying pre-sharpened knives and pretending I know what I'm doing.
