That cracked spine on the $80 folio made me rethink everything

Last month I was flattening a sewn binding and saw a customer's old $80 folio crack right down the hinge, so I asked them how long they'd owned it. Three years of daily carry with no support strip, is that just a built-in flaw or are we all skipping a step?

My buddy Tim had the same thing happen with a $120 planner, he babied it for two years and the hinge still gave out, so he just started duct taping the spine and honestly it looks kind of cool now. Maybe some of us are just doomed to fight the physics of daily carry.
