Feedback on my fan edit changed how I mix audio for old tapes

I posted a cut of a 1982 horror flick I spliced from a Betamax rip last month, and someone in the comments said my dialogue track was drowning out the score. They were right, I was boosting vocals way too hot on the left channel. After that, I started using a simple VU meter pattern from a 1987 forum post, now I balance at around -6 dB peaks. Anyone else get a critique that completely shifted their workflow for preserving weird tapes?

Damn, -6 dB peaks from a 1987 forum post? That's some ancient internet wizardry right there. I wouldn't even know where to start with a VU meter, I just eyeball my levels and pray. Props for sticking with that old school trick, sounds like it actually works.
