Picked a 2.0 audio track over a fake 5.1 surround on a horror rip

I was digging through a box of old tapes at a swap meet in Phoenix last month and found a bootleg of an 80s slasher flick. The label said '5.1 surround' but when I popped it in, the back channels were just echoey static. I switched to the 2.0 stereo track on the disc and suddenly the dialogue was clear and the jumpscares hit harder. Has anyone else noticed that fake surround mixes ruin the vibe on these old rips?

I read a blog that said many old bootlegs had fake surround just to sell more copies.

And the worst part is half the time it was just mono with reverb slapped on it.
