Spent 4 hours fixing a bootleg copy of The Thing with horrible audio sync

Found a VHS rip of John Carpenter's The Thing at a garage sale in Des Moines. Audio was off by a full 3 seconds the whole movie. Took me forever to manually shift the track in Audacity frame by frame. Anyone else waste an afternoon on a busted tape just because you wanted to watch it that bad?

So did you actually fix it or did you just convince yourself it was good enough? I mean 4 hours messing with audio in Audacity sounds like a headache for a garage sale tape that probably looks like it was recorded through a fisheye lens anyway. I get wanting to watch something bad but there's a point where you gotta ask if the movie is even watchable with that quality. Ive sat through some rough rips before but 3 seconds off would drive me nuts, id just call it a loss and find a stream.

The real question nobody's asking is what kind of tape player you're using @alice_kim cause old VCRs (and even some newer ones) process audio differently and that 3 second gap might be a head alignment issue, not a recording problem. I've got a stack of garage sale tapes that sync fine on one deck but shift like crazy on another, it's wild how much the hardware matters.
