Update: I thought old VHS rips were just unwatchable junk until my neighbor Lenny broke down why the bad tracking is the whole point
I have been messing with tapes for a while now, mostly grabbing stuff at yard sales around here, and I always skipped past the ones with that rolling static at the bottom because I figured they were just ruined. Last Saturday my neighbor Lenny came over while I was sorting a box from a flea market in Dayton and he grabbed a copy of Predator with the worst picture I have ever seen and got super excited. He said the wavy lines and the dropouts on that tape meant it was a second or third generation dub, like somebody copied it from a copy, and that over in some trading circles a clean version is actually worth less than a mangled one because it proves the tape has a history. I sat there for an hour while he pointed out how the audio wobbles right before the big scene and how some bootlegger probably paused the recorder to cut a trailer, and honestly it kind of rewired my brain. I had been treating these things like broken files I needed to fix when the mess is the actual reason to own them, you know? Now I am second guessing every clean rip in my collection and wondering what I tossed out over the last couple of seasons. Has anyone else had somebody flip their thinking on this, and what kind of damage do you actually look for when you are hunting?
