My old boss in Toledo made us clock in 10 minutes early for free, new job pays from the second we walk in
Honestly I used to think showing up early was just part of the deal, my old boss in Toledo had us all clock in 10 minutes before shift and clock out right on the dot. That is 50 minutes a week of unpaid time, so about 43 hours of free labor a year at $19 an hour. When I moved to a new company last spring, they told me the clock starts when I walk through the door, no exceptions. I ran the numbers and it came out to almost $800 a year I was just giving away before. My old boss always said it was normal, but nobody else I know does this. Has anyone else had a boss pull the early clock in thing and did you ever push back on it?
There is a whole other layer to this that nobody talks about. When you clock in early for free, the boss slowly starts expecting it as the baseline, so if you ever stroll in right at start time you look like the slacker even though you are literally on time. I watched a guy at my old place get written up for being "late" when he walked in at 7:00 for a 7:00 shift, all because everyone else was showing up at 6:50 for free. That is how a favor turns into a rule without anyone ever writing it down. The free minutes are bad enough, but the bigger cost is it messes with your head about what normal even looks like.
