A retired forester changed how I see dandelions after 20 minutes at a park bench
I sat down next to this old guy feeding pigeons by the river walk last Tuesday. He pointed at a dandelion patch and said, "You're looking at 5,000 seeds that will each find a crack in the concrete." He explained how taproots break up hard soil and how bees hit them early before anything else blooms. I always yanked them out of my yard, but now I leave a small strip near the fence. Has anyone else let weeds grow on purpose for the pollinators?

Wait, are we supposed to feel BAD about weeds now? Because I've spent the last five years winning a war against my lawn and honestly the dandelions might be winning anyway.

My back yard is basically a dandelion sanctuary at this point. I gave up after the third year of trying to pull them out and they just kept coming back stronger. Now I told my neighbor it's a "pollinator friendly lawn" and honestly it's weirdly freeing. The clover took over the shady spots and the dandelions own the sunny parts. Weeds are just plants that are better at growing than the grass we paid for, I guess.
