Hot take: that $200 fiddle leaf fig was a total waste of my money

I bought a huge fiddle leaf fig from a fancy nursery downtown last spring thinking it would transform my living room, and it dropped every single leaf within 6 weeks no matter what I did. Between the fussy watering schedule and the draft from my window, that plant cost me way more stress than it was worth. Has anyone else had better luck with cheaper, tougher plants like snake or ZZ?

Swap that fancy fig for a snake plant and watch it thrive on pure neglect like mine does lol.

The real problem with fancy plants like fiddles is they’re basically billboards for how good your home’s humidity and airflow are. My buddy spent $300 on one and it died in two weeks because his apartment has forced air heating that just nukes everything. Meanwhile my snake plant sat in a dark corner for three months without water and still put out a baby sprout. Some plants are just overpriced status symbols that need a greenhouse to survive.

300 bucks for a fiddle leaf fig is a lot. You can get a decent sized one at a big box store for maybe 40 or 50. Tell your buddy to stop buying plants from whatever fancy boutique is charging that much. Snake plants are definitely tough, but a fiddle can survive just fine in a normal house if you don't overwater it and give it some light from a window. They're not as fragile as people make out, just not as bulletproof as a snake plant.
