I think the whole 'native plants only' push in Portland is missing the point

Last spring, my neighbor tore out her beautiful Japanese maple to plant only local ferns and shrubs, saying it was the 'right' thing to do. That tree was over 15 years old and supported more bird nests than any other plant on our block. Now her yard looks bare, and I haven't seen a single nest there since. Has anyone else seen a local garden rule backfire like this?

Ugh @betty_palmer you're so right, the vibe matters just as much as the plants.

Sometimes the eco-friendly choice just kills the vibe.

Honestly @betty_palmer, that's a mood. Like those paper straws that just turn to mush before you finish a drink, or a dim eco-bulb in a lamp that's supposed to be cozy. It feels like the fun gets sacrificed. Maybe it's just me but sometimes the green option needs a better design so it doesn't ruin the whole point of the thing.
