I used to think houseplants were just for looks, but now I see them as little lives to keep

For the first couple years, I'd just buy whatever looked cool at the grocery store, water it when I remembered, and toss it when it died. The change came after my fiddle leaf fig dropped every single leaf over a week in December. I realized I was treating them like decor, not living things. Now I research light needs before I buy anything and keep a simple watering schedule on my phone. Has anyone else had a plant that made you switch from casual to committed?

Huh, well that fiddle leaf fig really put you through the wringer. But I'm curious, what made you finally decide to look up light needs instead of just buying another one? Was there a specific moment where you felt bad for the plant, or was it more about not wanting to waste money on something that kept dying? I've seen people go either way on that.

My friend cried when her first monstera got root rot, and that changed everything for her.
