Just realized I spent $80 on fancy potting soil that was basically just bagged dirt from the hardware store

I bought three bags of that premium organic mix from a local nursery in Portland, and after a month my seedlings still looked sickly compared to the ones my neighbor grew in regular compost he made himself. Anyone else fallen for the overpriced soil hype and have a cheap alternative that actually works?

Good grief, $60 on worm castings? That's pure overkill for most houseplants. Your friend probably just drowned them with love or put them in a dark corner. Save your money and just get a basic liquid fertilizer next time.
