Killed 3 monsteras before I figured out my watering can was the problem
Spent two years blaming my apartment's low light for yellowing leaves until I noticed the water was running straight through the pot in about 2 seconds flat. Turned out I'd been watering a bone dry peat mix that had gone hydrophobic, so all that water just poured down the sides and never touched the roots. Now I bottom water in a bucket for 20 minutes and everything is happy, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had a mix go bad like that.
Two years and three dead plants from a watering can is a stretch. Peat goes hydrophobic in like every bag if you let it dry out long enough, that's not some rare mystery. You water slow, you poke the soil, you check if it's actually soaking in. Standing there watching water shoot through in 2 seconds should tell you something after maybe the first dead monstera. Bottom watering for 20 minutes is fine but it's not some secret trick, people do it all the time. Sounds more like you just never looked at the soil before.
