Met a guy at the community garden who convinced me to stop pulling dandelions
He just knelt down, pointed at the taproot, and said 'that's a free salad and a soil aerator, why would you toss that?' and now I let them grow in the back corner.

Dandelions are a pain once they take over though. Yeah, I get that a single taproot can break up soil, but one dandelion turns into fifty by next spring if you don't pull them before they go to seed. I've spent whole afternoons digging those things out of a lawn where someone let them go for a season, and you're never getting them all back. A little patch in a back corner is one thing, but that stuff spreads faster than you think.

Yeah @victorb74, totally feel your pain on that one. I've pulled endless dandelions from a neighbor's yard that got out of hand and it's brutal.
