My neighbor's backyard garden made me rethink my whole approach to soil
I was talking to Mrs. Chen over the fence last Saturday (she's been growing vegetables for like 30 years) and she mentioned she never uses bagged potting soil anymore. She said she just mixes her own stuff from the yard with some compost she's been making since 2019. At first I thought she was just being old school but then she showed me her tomatoes compared to mine. Hers were huge and mine were tiny even though I spent $40 on fancy soil this spring. It got me thinking about how much we overcomplicate things with store bought products when nature already has the goods. She told me she just layers leaves and grass clippings and waits about 6 months. Has anyone else tried making their own soil mix instead of buying bags from the garden center?

The thing nobody's pointed out is that Mrs. Chen's soil probably has way more microbial life than any bag from the store. Those bags get sterilized to sit on a shelf for months, so you're basically dumping dead dirt into your garden. The real magic isn't her mixing method, it's that she's been feeding that same patch of ground for three decades. You can't recreate a 30 year old ecosystem overnight with store bought stuff. Her soil is literally alive. That's why her tomatoes look like they came from another planet while ours look like they came from a sad grocery store.
