Watering from the top was drowning my pothos for 2 years

I'd been dumping a cup of water right into the soil every other day and the leaves kept yellowing, until a friend at a plant swap in Austin said to check the roots... they were mush because the top inch stayed wet while the bottom dried out. Switching to bottom watering with a saucer for 10 minutes fixed it, my philodendron perked up within a month. Has anyone else had a watering habit that fought their plant's actual needs for way too long?

Mike’s monstera did the same, saucer method saved it in three weeks.
