Getting told your work is "clean enough for a rental" would sting, not gonna lie. I get why that one stuck with you, because it sounds like a backhanded compliment that says you did the least you could get away with. Your mileage may vary, but I'd take it as a nudge to tighten up the details and let the next job speak for itself.
