Appreciation post: The old guy at the yard in Tacoma who said to try a 1:1:6 mix for a repair patch
I mean, I thought it was way too lean, but that patch on the chimney is the only part that didn't crack after the freeze last week. Anyone else have a weird mix ratio that actually works?

Wait, really? That's wild. I always heard you needed way more lime for it to hold up, but I guess the proof is in the patch.

Did you try mixing in some sand with the lime?

Read an article about old farm repairs using lean mixes. The writer claimed a 1:2:9 ratio for lime, cement, and sand held up their barn foundation for fifty years. Said the extra sand let the mortar move a bit without cracking. Makes you wonder if modern mixes are too rigid sometimes.
