Guy on my crew said mortar should look like peanut butter, and now I can't stop thinking about it
He was spreading a batch on a job in Denver and kept saying it should be thick enough to hold a trowel mark but wet enough to squash flat when you press a brick down. I tried his mix on a test wall and the bricks barely slid at all, way less cleanup on the face. So what's your go-to test for getting it right, do you go by feel or is there a trick I'm missing?
Man, it's funny how one guy's random comment can change how you do things forever. That peanut butter line works because it's something everyone already knows from lunch, not some fancy ratio off a bag. Same thing happens with cooking, where a recipe finally clicks once somebody just says "cook it till it looks right.
