I finally asked my uncle why he always lays the first course with a string line, even on small jobs.

He said, 'A crooked start is a crooked finish, and no amount of skill can fix a bad foundation.' It hit different because I'd been rushing that step on patios, thinking I could eyeball it. How do you guys handle your first course setup?

Lol yeah? It's just a patio, not a crime scene.

Totally get what you mean about it hitting different. I was doing the same thing with a small walkway, just trying to line up the pavers by sight. It looked okay until I was halfway done and saw the whole thing was drifting to the left. Had to pull up like twenty blocks. Now I use a line for anything longer than three feet, no excuses. It saves so much time and headache later.
