I thought those laser levels were just a gimmick for a while

For years, I just used my string line and level, thinking the laser was extra stuff you didn't need. Then I had to do a long, straight garden wall last spring, about 80 feet. My buddy lent me his DeWalt laser level to set the line. Laying out that whole run took maybe 10 minutes instead of half an hour of fussing. The line was dead straight the whole way, no sag. I'm not saying you need one for every little job, but for long runs, it's a real time saver. Has anyone else found a specific job where a laser level just made things click?

You said it took maybe 10 minutes instead of half an hour, but honestly, I bet you saved even more time than that. Once you get used to the laser, you stop checking and rechecking the string for sag or a bumped pin. The real win is you just trust the line and keep working. For something like that wall, you probably saved the whole afternoon, not just 20 minutes. It clicks because it takes the doubt out of the job.

Totally get what you mean, @eva908. I had the same thing happen putting up shelves in my garage. Once I started using a laser level, I stopped second-guessing every single measurement. It just lets you move faster because you're not going back to fix little mistakes all the time.

Same with hanging a gallery wall.
