Showerthought: The Romans used a mortar mix that could last 2,000 years

Read it in an old library book about ancient building. Their recipe used volcanic ash, lime, and water. No modern cement. Some of those walls are still standing today. Makes you think about the stuff we use now. How many of our jobs will be around in a century? Anyone else ever look at old work and wonder what they knew that we forgot?

Ever notice how we build things to be replaced now? That old concrete was meant to last, but today's stuff is often made cheap and fast. It's less about forgetting and more about choosing a different goal.

Tbh @the_max is totally right about the different goals. We just don't value things that last anymore. I saw a bridge repair near me that was crumbling after like two years. It's all about the cheapest fix now, not the best one. Makes you wonder if we even could build like the Romans if we wanted to. We've traded lasting power for speed and low cost every single time.
