Stopped using mortar mix from the big box store and switched to a local yard's blend

I was getting constant cracking on my retaining wall jobs using that national brand stuff. Switched to a local yard's blend three months ago and the difference is night and day - way less shrinkage and it sets up smoother. Anybody else notice this or is it just my area in Ohio?

Had a buddy who did stone work in PA swear by the same thing. He switched to a local yard's mix after his big box walls kept looking like a cracked egg every spring. The local stuff just behaved better, less dust too, he said. Guess it's all about the aggregate they use, or maybe the clay content around here. Either way, glad it's working for you too.
