That garden wall I swore would take a day took me four full afternoons

I had this little retaining wall behind my shed, maybe 20 feet long, figured I'd knock it out in a Saturday. Turns out the old base was all shifted and I spent three hours just digging out roots and leveling the gravel. Has anyone else had a small job turn into a monster like that?

Used to roll my eyes at people who said every home project takes three times longer than you think, but I've learned that's just the truth. That gravel base and root problem sounds exactly like the kind of hidden mess that eats up your whole weekend.

Actually it's more like five times longer once you factor in the trips to the hardware store.
