Told the new guy to stop soaking bricks before laying them in July and he thought I was crazy until the wall set up fine
Half the crew still dunks every brick out of habit from old job sites, but on a hot day with type S mortar those bricks suck the water right out of the mix before it can cure, so we switched to just misting them and the bond has held solid for 6 months now.
Three years back we had the same fight on a job in August, and the old timers swore the mortar would dry out and crumble if we quit soaking. Tried it their way on one wall and it set up like sand, so we switched to a quick hose mist and kept the bricks damp to the touch without them being wet all the way through. Bond's been solid ever since, and now the guys who gave me the most grief are the ones telling the new hires the same thing.
