Tried pointing my brick joints with a squeeze bag instead of a trowel last week

I saw a guy on YouTube using a pastry bag for mortar and figured I'd give it a shot on a small backyard wall I was building. Squeezed it out like frosting and it looked clean at first, but after about 10 feet the mortar started cracking because I packed it too thin. Learned that the bag works fine for filling gaps but you still gotta hit it with a jointer tool right after or the bond won't hold. Has anyone else messed around with weird pointing methods and had them backfire?

Did the bag just tear on you halfway through?

I was on mile 8 of a 12 mile run with a 20 pound bag last week. The seam on the bottom left corner started to split right around mile 6, and by mile 9 I was basically carrying the whole thing with one hand trying to keep the weights from spilling out. But honestly, I think it was more about how I packed it than the bag itself. I had a sharp edge on one of the plates digging into that spot.
