Had a rough week with $5 meals that just tasted like sadness

I used to think you could make anything taste good if you just added enough seasoning. But last Tuesday I made black bean soup with week old veggies and it came out like muddy water, no joke. Even the hot sauce couldn't save it, I dumped half the bowl. Made me realize some cheap meals just aren't worth the effort if the ingredients are already past their prime. Has anyone else hit a point where a budget dinner just broke your spirit?

The muddy water soup is a rite of passage at this point. I've been there with a "chili" that was basically just kidney beans floating in tomato juice, crying into my bowl at the kitchen counter. You start wondering if you're saving money or just paying to be disappointed. The worst part is when you've committed to a whole pot of it and you have to eat the leftovers for three days. My record is staring at a container of oatmeal that looked like wet cement and just eating a handful of crackers instead. Sometimes the cheap option wins by reminding you what real food tastes like.

The "crying into my bowl" part got me. That's a whole mood right there.

Nah, cheap meals hit different when you actually season them right.
