Swapped from canned tomatoes to whole ones and save $4 per batch

I used to buy the $2.50 cans of crushed tomatoes for my chili until I realized whole tomatoes cost $1.20 and take 30 seconds to crush by hand. Been doing it for 3 months now with no difference in taste. Anyone else find other canned goods that are way cheaper with a little extra effort?

Check if your store brand spices are cheaper in the bulk section.

Oh absolutely, that's such a smart swap. I started doing the same thing with roasted red peppers instead of the jarred ones. The jarred ones are like $4 for a small jar, but a big red bell pepper is maybe a dollar and you just roast it in the oven for 20 minutes. Saves me like $3 every time I make pasta. Also found that buying a whole block of cheese and shredding it myself is way cheaper than the pre-shredded bags. I mean, it's like half the price and it melts better too. You just gotta plan ahead a little but it's honestly not that much extra work.
